I was sitting down with my sister yesterday discussing her online birthday party business www.pizazzpartybags.com when a question came up: “How can I market my company on a limited budget?” Generally, business owners mistakenly believe that a large budget is necessary to saturate the market. They somehow have been convinced that spending the “right” amount of money is what it takes to generate a high volume of business. The truth is, however, that mass advertisement does work in some cases, but no across-the-board, magic-dollar solution exists. And you don’t have to spend a fortune to generate a fortune in income. However, there are certain rules that, when applied diligently, work—all the time. They are the straightforward principles of marketing: First, define who your customers are in great detail. Second, find out what it is that your target markets want or need, and then provide a product and/or service to fulfill those wants/needs. Third, develop a message that speaks directly to their needs. Offer clear benefits, not features and fluff. Fourth, position yourself in the marketplace where your target markets already go. And fifth, make your products and services easily accessible to your target. Too often companies spend massive amounts of money in advertisement without applying one or more of the principles of marketing and subsequently wonder why their returns are so dismal. You can prevent such fiascos. If you define the potential buyers you are targeting and determine what they truly are looking for, you can position your business in a place that makes it easy for them to buy from you. Then, with the right message, you will have a higher conversion ratio without having to spend your entire budget on marketing and advertising.
